Macy’s will open a new discount store — called Macy’s Backstage — in the Loehmann’s Seaport Plaza on Wednesday, September 2.

Earlier this year, Macy’s announced it was entering the “off-price” retail market and will open six pilot locations in New York and New Jersey to compete against companies like T.J. Maxx, Ross and a Nordstrom Rack. The new stores will sell off-price brand name apparel, as well as home furnishings and clearance goods from regular Macy’s stores.

The Macy’s Backstage in Sheepshead Bay, located at 2027 Emmons Avenue, will occupy the space previously home to Leohmann’s, the discount clothing retailer that closed in early 2014 after its parent company went bankrupt. The building’s owners are required to house a department store in that space, due to a long battle with residents who argued that the seaport plaza was out of scale with the rest of the neighborhood.

Two Macy’s Backstage locations in Queens and Huntington, New York will also open on September 2. The other stores are expected to be in business within the coming weeks, according to a Macy’s spokesperson.

The discount stores will be one-fifth the size of a regular Macy, about 30,000 square feet, according to NBC New York.
