Good morning, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

We’re expecting to see temperatures hover above freezing, according to the National Weather Service, further supporting that the polar vortex that lingered over the Northeast at the start of the week has moved east. We’re happy to finally ditch the heavy sweaters and long johns. How did you beat the polar freeze, locals?

Here’s more news to begin your day:

  • A month after SUNY Downstate tabled a campaign to buy Long Island College Hospital, a competing plan to build apartments has emerged, Crain’s New York Business reported. The plan, spearheaded by the Brooklyn Hospital Center and private investors, would close the hospital to build 1,000 mixed-income apartments.
  • What are the most important stories to watch in 2014? The Brooklyn Paper let us know the top 14 that its reporters will watch as the year unfolds. Of note are plans to build apartments at LICH, G train improvements and stagnated Atlantic Yards project development. What local news stories are you most interested in this year?
  • It’s winter, but you’re still able to buy greens locally that are so fresh they’re technically still alive, according to The Greene Grape. The greens, grown in urban greenhouses in Philadelphia and Orange, NJ, include Scarlet Frills Mustard Greens, Baby Tuscan Kale, watercress and spinach.
