Crime Report: Street Thefts, Assaults and Home Burglaries

Police arrested two 15-year-old boys and one 16-year-old boy for allegedly striking a man in the head with a metal door handle and stealing a personal radio on Jan. 9 at 1:30 p.m. near Fleet Place and Willoughby Street. He was taken to Brooklyn Hospital Center, police said.

The three face charges of robbery in first, second and third degrees, assault in the second and third degree, grand larceny in the fourth degree, menacing in second degree and third degree, petit larceny, criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, criminal possession of a weapon in fourth degree, and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

Including the above crime, police reported 24 felonies and 12 arrests in the 88th Precinct between Jan. 5 and Jan. 12, an increase compared to the previous week’s report of nine felonies and two arrests. Locals also reported assaults, home burglaries, vehicle thefts and credit card fraud.

Assaults

-Police arrested a 16-year-old boy on Jan. 8 for allegedly slashing an 18-year-old man with a knife on Jan. 6 at 2:42 p.m. at Grand Avenue and Lefferts Place. The victim was treated on scene by EMTs for cuts to his head, arm and hand, police said. The teen was charged with assault in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

-A 33-year-old woman was punched in the face and choked until she was nearly unconscious on Jan. 8. She told police that she heard a noise outside her apartment near Saint Edwards Street and Myrtle Avenue at 10:50 p.m. and went to investigate. Soon after she was attacked. She received medical attention on the scene from EMTs.

Police arrested Karim Allen, 29, was arrested two days later. He was charged with strangulation in second degree, assault in third degree, criminal obstruction of breathing or blood circulation, menacing in the third degree and harassment in second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

Street Thefts

-A 25-year-old woman told police she had been pushed to the ground and robbed by two men and a woman in Fort Greene Park at 9:15 p.m. on Jan. 5. One man pushed her to the ground and the other grabbed her cellphone from her coat pocket, cops said. The female thief grabbed the woman’s purse from her shoulder and ran north on North Portland Avenue toward Park Place. The men ran in the opposite direction. Police canvassed the area but could not find the thieves.

-A 20-year-old woman told police that she had been punched in the face and robbed while walking through the Ingersoll Houses on Jan. 6. She was walking through the housing complex at 1:10 a.m., when a man began following her, police said. He punched her and grabbed her purse with her wallet inside. She received medical attention from EMTs on the scene but refused to file a report, police said. Police searched the area but could not find the attacker.

-Police arrested Kristina Smalls-Smith, 30, for allegedly stealing $20 from a woman on the street near Flushing Avenue and North Elliott Place on Jan. 12 at 7:15 p.m. Smalls-Smith had stopped the woman and asked for help, then forcibly removed the $20 from the victim’s hand. She faces charges of attempted robbery in the third degree, and attempted grand larceny in the fourth degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

Thefts from Homes

-A 34-year-old man told police that a white iPod, a white iPad mini and a pair of Beats headphones were stolen during a holiday party at his home near Clinton Avenue and Myrtle Avenue on Dec. 14. The man had invited several known and unknown guests to his apartment for the celebration, cops said. He told police that he questioned the guests when he discovered that his property was missing at around 11 p.m.

-A 72-year-old woman told the police this week that four rings worth $20,500 have been missing from her apartment since Dec. 27. The victim had a part-time home attendant who last worked on that same day, police said. She had tried to contact the attendant numerous times, she told cops, but the phone number had been disconnected. Only one other person, the victim’s daughter, a member of the New York Police Department, has had access to her apartment since then, the woman told cops. The rings were a one carat diamond white gold ring, a 1.2 carat diamond platinum engagement ring, a one carat diamond ring and a yellow diamond ring.

iPhone Thefts

-Police arrested a 15-year-old boy on Jan. 8 for allegedly stealing an iPhone from a backpack during a police decoy operation on a northbound Q train near Flatbush Avenue and Hanson Place. The Kings County District Attorney’s office could not provide details on the charges.

-A teen told police that a man stole his iPhone at Bagel World at 3 p.m. on Jan. 8. The thief had bumped into the teen and took the iPhone from his pocket, cops said. There was a tracking app on the phone, but the phone was shut off when police attempted to track it.

Subway Theft

A 32-year-old woman’s wallet was stolen when she rode the B train on Jan. 6, police said. The woman told police that she was on the subway line from 34th Street to the DeKalb and Flatbush Avenues. After she left the subway at 6:15 p.m., she discovered that her red, black and white Freitag wallet containing $200, debit and credit cards from Bank of America and a Citibank credit card had been stolen from her bag.

Thefts from Vehicles

-A thief stole $50,460 worth of Crate & Barrel boxes containing dinnerware and garment bags with clothing from a truck parked on Atlantic Avenue and South Elliot Place at 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 6, police said. The general manager of a nearby Tony Roma’s restaurant said he would provide police with video surveillance footage of the scene.

-A 22-year-old woman told police that a tan backpack containing a Lenovo laptop had been stolen from her car parked near the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Jan. 6 between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. She was not sure if she had locked her car and there was no broken glass near the car, police said.

Damaged Property

An 80-year-old man told police that someone broke the deadbolt lock on the ground floor door of his home near Saint James Place and Greene Avenue on Jan. 9. The man did not report any missing property, cops said.

Thefts from Stores

-Police arrested two 17-year-old boys and two 16-year-old boy for allegedly stealing potato chips, candy, soda and a DVD from a 7/11 on Flatbush Avenue on Jan. 12 at 12:35 a.m. A store clerk told police that he attempted to block the suspects from leaving, but one of the teens punched him in the chest. Police found the suspects at a McDonald’s down the block.

The teens face charges of robbery in second and third degree, petit larceny, attempted assault in the third degree, menacing in the third degree and harassment in the second degree, according to the Kings County District Attorney’s office.

-Dino lost $1,418 after an employee left the restaurant unattended for an hour on Jan. 7. The employee told the police that he had left the front door unlocked when he left the restaurant to run errands at 5:30 p.m. When he came back an hour and 10 minutes later, a black metal box containing the cash had been stolen from his desk.

-The owner of Su’juck on Greene Avenue told police that when she opened her store at 6 a.m. on Jan. 10, she discovered $638 worth of merchandise had been stolen. Items stolen included a fox fur coat, a Rachel Weisberg orange top, a vintage London Fog trench coat with a scarf and a pair of white knee-high suede boots, police said. Officers collected video surveillance from a neighboring store.

Unauthorized Bank Account Usage

A 23-year-old man reported to police on Jan. 3 that someone had accessed his Citibank account without permission and withdrew $2,500 between Jan. 1 and Jan. 2. He told cops that he was in possession of his credit cards at all times.

Cell Phone and Credit Card Fraud

-A 37-year-old woman told police on Jan. 4 that someone used her personal information to open a cell phone account from Verizon Wireless and ran up a bill of $162.09. The Verizon fraud department closed the account on Jan. 4, police said.

-A 34-year-old man reported on Jan. 6 that someone had used his personal information to open 11 store credit accounts and ran up charges totaling $6,500, police said.

Automobile Thefts

-Franky Seaborn, 29, was arrested in the 104th precinct in Queens on Jan. 10 while allegedly driving a stolen Lincoln town car. The car was reported stolen from a limo driver the day before, cops said. The limo driver told police that he had picked up Seaborn and another man on Jan. 9 from Fulton Street and Flatbush Avenue. The driver told cops that he was taking Seaborn to multiple banks to cash a check, when the other passenger started to hit Seaborn, saying he wanted money Seaborn owed him. When the driver pulled over and left the car to call 911, Seaborn moved into the driver’s seat and drove the car south on Ashland Place. The Kings County District Attorney’s office could not provide any information on the charges.

-A 54-year-old man reported to police that his van was stolen on Jan. 12 at 9 a.m. He had parked his van under the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on Jan. 10 at 6:45 p.m., cops said. He told police he had seen the van from his window at 8:00 a.m. on Jan. 11, but at 11:00 a.m. he saw that it was gone. He and his wife were the only ones with the keys, cops said.

-A 52-year-old woman told police that her car was stolen. She parked her 1996 Acura Integra at Lexington Avenue and Grand Avenue on Jan. 11 at 7:20 p.m. and returned the next morning at 8:25 a.m. and discovered it was missing.

-Someone tried to steal another Acura Integra from Lexington Avenue and Grand Avenue the same day, police said. A 22-year-old man told police on Jan. 12 he parked his car at 7 p.m. the previous night. When he returned the next morning at 10:30 a.m., his car had been broken into and the ignition was broken, though nothing was missing, cops said. The police could not say if there was a connection with the above theft.
