Purim is just around the corner, and some of our local religious and community organizations are holding fun events to celebrate. Here’s what you can look forward to this weekend and next:

Mask Making
Saturday, March 8 and Sunday, March 9
East Midwood Jewish Center (1625 Ocean Avenue between Avenues K and L)

The Saturday event will be held from 6:30-8pm, and the Sunday version from 10am-11:30pm. Both are free, but RSVPs are appreciated via roomj@emjc.org.

Purim Festival
Sunday, March 9
Chesnut Avenue (runs from E 14th to E 17th Streets, just above Avenue M)

From 12-4pm, attendees of the Midwood Development Corporation, Midwood Merchants Association, and Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce‘s first ever Purim Festival can enjoy a “pick-a-prize” auction, free rides for kids, and more. Admission to the event is free.

Megillah Reading, Spiels, and a Carnival
Saturday, March 15
Temple Beth Emeth (83 Marlborough Road on the corner of Church Avenue)

A “raucous and fun” Megillah reading for kids will start at 10am, says Rabbi Heidi Hoover, including skits by the Temple’s school classes, with a reading for adults taking place at 8pm. In between, starting at noon, the Temple will hold a carnival with snacks, hot dogs, games, and prizes. Kids two and under are free; admission is $5 for everyone else.

Megillah Reading Plus Mask and Costume Ball
Saturday, March 15
East Midwood Jewish Center (1625 Ocean Avenue between Avenues K and L)

After the 7:15pm service and 8pm Megillah reading in the EMJC’s main sanctuary, neighbors are invited to a dress up gala featuring face painting, a DJ, snacks, contests, and a parade. Groggers and noisemakers are encouraged!

There are two sessions of this costume party–on at 10:30am and one at 3pm–which will feature a Megillah reading, snacks, mask, hamentaschen, and grogger making activities, and a performance by owners Leilah and Maoz Ezra.
