The 72nd Precinct has a new commanding officer. Captain Tommy Ng officially took over command on Monday, July 7, as Deputy Inspector James Grant, who’d been at the helm of the 72nd since December 2011, moved on to take over the 19th Precinct on the Upper East Side.

Captain Ng comes to the 72nd from the 109th Precinct in Flushing, Queens, where he was the executive officer. He’s been with the NYPD for more than 17 years. Back in 2010, while he was at the 111th Precinct, he made a notable arrest while off-duty, when he noticed a teen trying to break into a car — it turned out the kid was responsible for several other break-ins at the time.

Though the 72nd Precinct Community Council meetings are on summer break until Tuesday, September 9, you can meet the new CO at the National Night Out Against Crime on Tuesday, August 5 from 4-8pm at the soccer field in Sunset Park (44th Street and 6th Avenue entrance). It’s a good chance to meet him and some of the other officers from the precinct, plus, as always, there’s food, drinks, and fun for the whole family.
