Coffee lovers will soon have to schlep a few extra blocks to get their caffeine fix. Gorilla Coffee at 97 5th Avenue (at Park Place) will close on Monday, January 2.

A note posted on the door of the shop reads, “Shuffle On Down to Bergen,” instructing customers to visit the other Gorilla Coffee located nearby at 472 Bergen Street (between 5th and Flatbush Avenues).

The note continues to explain that the Bergen Street shop was opened in October 2013 with the intention of it replacing the 5th Avenue space and being Gorilla’s “new Park Slope Shop,” but the owners loved the corner spot at 5th Avenue and Park Place, as well as its neighbors and regulars, so much that they kept both locations running for three additional years.

Now locals will have to make do with only one Gorilla Coffee in the neighborhood. The note adds, “All your favorite staff will be there…[at the Bergen Street location].” A barista working at the 5th Avenue shop Monday afternoon said that everyone is “looking forward to the change,” and hinted that the owner may have plans to open something new in the neighborhood.

BKLYNER tried reaching out to Gorilla Coffee owner Carol McLaughlin for more information, but did not hear back from her before press time.
