Con Edison said a burnt cable was responsible for knocking out power at more than 850 homes in parts of Marine Park, Sheepshead Bay and Gerritsen Beach Saturday morning.

Although the outage affected a large area, the company fixed the problem and restored power a little more than an hour after it was reported at 9:25am, according to a Con Edison spokesperson.

Doreen Garson, chief of the Gerritsen Beach volunteer fire department, said the issue was resolved relatively quickly.

“It wasn’t a major power outage. Sometimes we have it out for hours and hours,” she said. “This one was nothing to talk about, truthfully.”

Overheated cables have cause several other power outages in the area this summer. In one instance, an entire block in Midwood went dark while Con Ed workers fixed the problem. Another burnt cable cut power at the Kings Bay Y, causing the community center to cancel most of its weekend programs.
