BKLYNER Weekend Events Spotlight: February 24-26, Arts Edition

The forecast predicts unseasonably warm temperatures with some rain this weekend, but that shouldn’t keep you from going out and enjoying some culture. Here are 4 art events happening this weekend. Bonus: 2 of the events are Resist-inspired fundraisers, so you can support some great organizations while you enjoy the artwork.

A Seat at the Table| Black Artstory Month Closing Event
When: Friday, February 24th, 6 to 9pm
Where: Brooklyn Navy Yard BLDG 92 (63 Flushing Avenue at Carlton Avenue)
What: Black Artstory’s closing event will focus on the importance of creating visual representations and journeying together towards self-preservation and collective work for  healing and protection. There will be a community curated playlist, dance, movement arts, performances, and a pop-up art exhibit.

“Marked Urgent” — An Exhibition in Defense of Free Press
When: February 24th – 26th (opening reception Friday, Feb. 24th from 6 to 8:30pm)
Where: Ground Floor Gallery, 339 5th Street between 5th & 6th Avenues
What: A new exhibition entitled “Marked Urgent” — An Exhibition in Defense of Free Press, organized in response to the Trump administration’s “dismissive treatment of one of our most powerful constitutional rights: freedom of expression as protected by the First Amendment, namely, free press.” An open call for artwork requested works on paper—paper commonly associated with correspondence and communication, such as letterhead, envelopes, Post-it Notes, newspapers, etc. $25 from each sale will go to the Committee to Protect Journalists.

Microcosm Fundraiser & Multi-Media Art Exhibition
When: Sunday, February 26th, 6 to 9:30pm
Where: Stellar Yoga Space, 915 Fulton Street (between Clinton & Waverly Avenues)
What: Fundraiser and gallery show featuring the work of ten local artists (and a few nasty women from afar) working together to fight against the “fascist-in-chief.” Multi-media artwork ranging in price from $20 to $200 will be on sale with proceeds benefitting Immigration Equality, an LGBTQ+ immigrant rights organization, and Providence House, a women’s shelter in Bedford-Stuyvesant.

The Sonic Jungle
When: Saturday, February 25th, 9pm to late
Where: 510 Flatbush Avenue (between Lefferts Avenue and Lincoln Road)
What: The launch of a “Cultural Oasis” for the creative and the curious. A pop-up event hosted in a 44,000-square-foot venue featuring 3 floors of music, art, live performances, infrared saunas and healing lounges, educational workshops, LED and eco art installations, herbal apothecary and aromatherapy, film screenings, and retro gaming areas.
