Bite Of The Day: Prosciutto & Fig Jam-Filled Sandwiches From Baba Cool

Feeling a little peckish the other day, we decided to grab a bite at Baba Cool (64-B Lafayette Avenue between South Elliott Place and South Portland Avenue). Of their menu, which includes pastries, toasts, breakfast snacks, and more, we chose their chicken and prosciutto sandwich with mushrooms, rosemary, and mozzarella ($11, above), as well as their turkey, apple, and manchego sandwich with carmelized onions and fig jam ($11, below).

The chicken and prosciutto sandwich (served on dreamy focaccia from Manhattan’s Grandaisy Bakery) offered a surprising citrusy nip, enhancing its savory base. As for the turkey sandwich, the juxtaposition of juicy meat, crisp apples, pungent onions, and sticky-sweet fig jam was delightful on crusty toasted Stirato.

Don’t be fooled by Baba Cool’s plating style, which is as minimalistic as the rest of the cafe–these pricey, seemingly-small sandwiches are totally filling. Still, they won’t drag you down into an icky mid-afternoon stupor like a lot of heavier bread/meat combos do.

You can check out Baba Cool’s full menu of food and drinks here, then head over from 7am-7pm to try their goodies for yourself.
