Bergen Street Comics announced this week that they will debut the Copra Compendium at the MoCCA Arts Festival in Kips Bay this weekend. The Compendium will reprint the first three issues of Copra, the self-published comic book by Brooklyn-based cartoonist Michel Fiffe. It is the first publication from the local comic book and graphic novel store.

Bergen Street Comics has consistently supported self-published and local comics since its opening in 2009, and owners Tom Adams and Tucker Stone have carried Michel Fiffe’s work for the last few years. Copra, which Comics Alliance has described as “a compelling, dimension-spanning adventure of a mercenary team on the run from everyone,” has been one of their most successful.

Its popularity went beyond the local market, however, and it became evident as multiple printings sold out that production needed to change to keep up with the demand. Determined to keep Copra’s fanbase growing, Bergen Street Comics stepped in.

“We knew from talking to Michel that the demand for Copra had hit the point where he was selling out of all of his copies, and it seemed like a great opportunity for us to take over the costs of reprinting the earlier issues so that he could stay focused on the new ones,” Tucker says.

“On top of that– and maybe more importantly– my partner Tom Adams and I genuinely adore Copra. I think it’s one of the most exciting comics I’ve read in a while, and being able to be involved in some capacity was an opportunity that neither of us wanted to pass up. I texted Tom immediately when Fiffe told us he was worried he might have to turn customers away for some of the earlier issues, and that was all it took– we got on board and were talking about print runs and distribution within an hour.”

You can check out the Copra Compendium at the MoCCA Arts Festival this weekend at table F179. Starting Monday, April 8, it will also be available in store and online, retailing at $12. They are also working on distributing it wholesale to stores throughout the US and UK.

As for Bergen Street’s foray into the publishing world, this is just the beginning. Says Tucker, “This is only the first of what Tom and I hope to be a bunch of really awesome and interesting comics to come.”

Bergen Street Comics is located at 470 Bergen Street between 5th & Flatbush Avenues, (718) 230-5600. The MoCCA Arts Festival is located at the 69th Regiment Armory at 68 Lexington Avenue, 11:00 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday April 6 & Sunday April 7.
