It looks like the end of Bay Pizzeria.

The local favorite, at 1420 Sheepshead Bay Rd, has closed down. The shutters have been down for the past couple of weeks, and rumors were going around that it was just for renovations. The lights on the awning still hang there, but unlit, as an ominous reminder of what once was.

Unfortunately, a “for rent” sign is now up in the window with a phone number for a man named George who is helping the owner of the building rent the space out. We could not reach the owner of the building.

The people working in the stores on that block don’t know what happened. The person working next door at Tech Kings Wireless said that one day “they just took their stuff and left.”

There is no indication that the pizzeria will be moving to a different location, such as a sign directing customers to a new store, but we were unable to reach the pizzeria’s owner to ask.

The pizzeria briefly closed down in 2011 for failing to pay taxes, but opened again for business after a few days.

Bay Pizzeria won the Sheepshead Bites poll in April for best pizza in the neighborhood.

We’ll be keeping an eye on this as the story develops. We hope that the signs aren’t true, and that we will be able to eat a Sicilian slice from Bay Pizzeria again in the future.
