Assault With A Pool Cue, A Stolen Bike & More Recent Crime In Kensington


It’s been busy recently for identity thefts in our area, and unfortunately also for a few assaults on local streets. Regular 28-day reports from the 66th Precinct offer a snapshot of felonies committed in Kensington’s two sectors, G and K. Sector G includes Beverley Rd to Ave F, and 37th Street to Coney Island Avenue; Sector K covers Caton Ave to Beverley Rd, and 37th Street to Coney Island Ave. The entire 66th Precinct is split into 13 sectors, lettered A-J. The incidents below cover the period from Friday, March 14 to Friday, April 11.

ROBBERY

Friday, April 4, 5:48am
East 9th Street between Avenue C & Cortelyou Rd
Two unknown men stopped a 45-year-old man as he was walking home early in the morning, and one punched him while the other flashed a knife, cops say. The perps fled taking the man’s cell phone and $400.

FELONY ASSAULTS

Saturday, March 22, 4:10am
Coney Island Avenue between Cortelyou Rd & Ditmas Ave
Police say someone hit a 24-year-old man over the head with a pool stick, lacerating and bruising him.

Saturday, April 5, 12:30am
Ditmas Avenue between McDonald Ave & E 2nd St
According to the cops, a customer punched a 45-year-old store clerk in his face and head, and then slashed his index finger. Another man, 51, tried to break up the fight, but the perp/customer cut him too, leaving a small gash in his middle finger. The attack on the clerk left him swollen, bleeding, and in pain, and the police took him and the second victim to the hospital for treatment.

Church & Coney Island Avenues
The three suspect, young men between 20 and 26 years old, got into a verbal argument with another 20-year-old man. Cops say one chased the victim with a metal pipe, punching him in the face until he bled, and that the second used his belt buckle to beat the victim on his body, while the third punched him out again in the face until he fell down and hit his head on the sidewalk. Arrests made.

GRAND LARCENIES

Sometime between Wednesday, March 26, 9:30pm and Thursday, March 27, 8am
East 8th Street between Cortelyou Rd & Ditmas Ave
In the morning a woman discovered all four tires on her 2011 Nissan Murano were gone. The cops say the tires were worth around $2,500.

Sometime between Saturday, March 22, 8am and Monday, March 24, 9am
McDonald Avenue between Caton Ave & Albemarle Rd
Police say thieves charged $1,019 worth of purchases at BJ’s Wholesale Club using info from a woman’s bank account, which she reported to the NYPD on Saturday, March 29.

Sunday, March 30, 4am
East 9th St between Beverley Road & Ave C
Another theft early in the morning, as cops say someone stole a man’s very expensive bicycle from his driveway — it was reportedly worth $1,079.

Sometime between Thursday, March 27, noon and Monday, April 7, 6pm
Beverley Road between E 8th St & Coney Island Ave
Cops say a swindler used a local woman’s name to open a new Verizon account, which was worth $226. It was not reported to the NYPD until April 8.

Sometime between 5:30pm and 7:30pm on Monday, March 31
East 2nd Street between Cortelyou Rd & Ditmas Ave
Police report another thief took some identification cards from a woman’s bag — the haul included a property stamp card, her hospital ID, and her Mexican ID, along with $46. She reported the incident to cops on Wednesday, April 9.

For an overview of what’s happening in the entire 66th Precinct, here’s its latest CompStat report, #14 for the week ending April 6, enumerating felony crimes and misdemeanors, shootings, and subway incidents. The current report shows total felony crimes for the week dropped 29.6%, compared with same week a year ago. Total felonies for 2014 have also dropped, as have most categories in the 28-day figures. The biggest exception is felony assaults, which have increased 200% in the past 28 days, from 4 last year to 12 this year.
