A New Mural Is Coming to E 16th St

A new mural is going to up on East 16th St and Newkirk Avenue (pictured above), says Robin Redmond, Executive Director at the Flatbush Development Corporation. The old mural (pictured below) was removed in July.

The FDC is now in the early stages of planning the new mural. Robin says the first steps toward painting the wall include securing funding and finding a teaching artist that can work with children.

“We would like to conceptualize the mural with children,” says Robin, “and then design with a teacher. We want a good chunk of the work done by children and, obviously, a bigger chunk of the final work done by the teacher.”

The FDC cites the mural in the Newkirk Plaza tunnel as a successful project worth emulating, from the call for artists and designs to the teaching artist who helped direct the community effort. Where the tunnel mural brightened a dark and dangerous alleyway, the C-Town mural is giving the community a voice on a wall once used exclusively for gang graffiti.
