Happy Kwanzaa! Today is the first day of of the holiday, which neighbors around the borough are celebrating through New Year’s Day. Looking for some family-friendly ways to enjoy it in the area? Here are a few events happening nearby:

Zawadi Fun
Friday, December 27, 11:30am & 2:30pm
Brooklyn Children’s Museum, 145 Brooklyn Avenue
Explore the holiday by learning about its importance to families around the world. Make a necklace as a zawadi, or gift for a friend or family member. Free with museum admission, this event is appropriate for children up to age 5.

Season’s Greetings: Kwanzaa
Friday, December 27 & Saturday, December 28, 11:30am
Brooklyn Children’s Museum, 145 Brooklyn Avenue
Much like the event for the younger kids at the museum, this one will take a look at the traditions of the holiday, and kids can make greeting cards to send to family and friends, but this one is designed for children 5 and up. Free with museum admission.

Kwanzaa Celebration At The Central Library
Friday, December 27, 3pm
Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza
Learn about the seven principles and symbols of Kwanzaa, enjoy performances, and make zawadi. It’s free, and appropriate for all ages.

Kwanzaa Family Celebration With Iris Wilson
Sunday, December 29, 11:30am-1pm
Cumbe Center for African and Diaspora Dance, 558 Fulton Street
Join dancer, choreographer, educator, and author Iris Wilson for an interactive celebration with song, dance and a candle lighting ceremony. Open to families with children of all ages, $10 per family (up to five people, $2 each additional family member), tickets available online.
