28-Year-Old Man Shot and Killed on East 23rd Street

A 28-year-old man was shot and killed just after 11am, according to the NYPD. They say they received a 911 call about the shooting at 490 East 23rd Street, between Newkirk and Foster, and when they got there, found the man with gun shot wounds to the body. EMS arrived and pronounced the man dead at the scene.

His name has not yet been released, and police say there have been no arrests. The investigation into the shooting, which they’ve classified as a homicide, is ongoing. We’ll update as we learn more.

Our thoughts go out to the man’s family and friends.

UPDATE 12:15am, 3/20/12: The victim has been identified by police as Farrell Nestor of Snyder Avenue. The Post reports that he had served some time in jail for robbery and weapons possession, and quotes his sister as saying he was trying to “better himself” since his release. They also note that the shooting took place on the sixth floor, and that police sources said two suspects may have fled the scene via the fire escape, but were taken into custody from a nearby rooftop. Even so, no one has been charged yet.
