1024 Fulton Street May Become Affordable Housing, Social Services & Retail Hub

The long-empty building at 1024 Fulton Street (between Grand and Classon Avenues) will likely be turned into low-income housing with social services for veterans and seniors and some retail space, says the New York Daily News.

The paper reports, following the approval of both houses of state legislature, that the building has been purchased by Northeast Brooklyn Housing Development Corp from New York state. Governor Andrew Cuomo, who the publication says approves of the sale, simply has to sign off.

Northeast will have to carry out some major structural repairs to the building, which has been vacant since the 1990s. A bid was made for 1024 by the Center for Nursing Rehabilitation in 2011, who were ultimately unable to secure adequate funding.

It’s unclear how many residential units the building will offer–and that’s not all. Neighbor Schellie Hagan told the Daily News of the transaction, which was completed without public input, “We don’t know what’s going on. There’s rumoring all over the place. I’d like to see them treat people honestly.”
